JOHNSON, Clare

Clare Louise Johnson was educated at Walthamstow Hall, Kent and studied Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art and has worked in the art world ever since, first knitwear, then animatronic costume making at Jim Henson's, followed by community projects, mostly based around printing on fabric, banners and flags with schools, elderly care, hospitals, and football clubs. Clare is a printmaker but is also involved with collagraphs, mixed media, painting, photography, and screen printing. Her current practice evolved because of a move from London to Lowestoft, where she is living in an industrial landscape which has highlighted a long-held love for practical buildings where form follows the function to create hand-tinted postcards. Searching maps, paper and virtual, for shapes and symbols signifying gasholders, water towers plus other loved or loathed structures, ignored or protected by State and neighbours. Her work has won prizes at the Eastern Open and been commissioned by Norfolk Tourists board and The National Theatre, London and she is a member of the British Water Tower Appreciation Society. A member of Easterly Artists, Clare has exhibited at Horace Blue, Norwich; Reunion Gallery, Felixstowe; Artworks East; Skylark Gallery, Gabriels Wharf, London; Affordable Art Fair, Battersea and at Bristol; Centre Point, London with solo shows at the Town Hall, Great Yarmouth and Pond Gallery at Snape Maltings Galleries. A former member of Suffolk Open Studios with her studio at 28 Commercial Road, Lowestoft. Clare and partner Orson Kartt also run The-Art-Gallery at 102 High Street, Lowestoft.
