GODDARD, Henry Christmas

1829 - 1881

Henry Christmas Goddard was born on 25 December 1829 and baptised at Aldeburgh, Suffolk on 2 January 1830, son of Henry Goddard (1805-1876), a miller, and his wife Eliza née Sewell (c1808-1867). In 1851, Henry was a 21-year-old miller, living at Knodishall, Suffolk with his parents, 45-year-old Henry and 42-year-old Eliza and his three siblings, Joseph S. 14, born at Woodbridge, Jesse G. 10 and Rhoda Eliza 9, both born at Henley, Ipswich, and ten years later was a visitor at the home of miller Thomas Buckmaster at Mellis, near Eye. Henry married at Knodishall in 1862, Mary Last and secondly at St Nicholas church, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 12 September 1869, Louisa Jane Jary and in 1871, a 40-year-old miller, living at the home of his father at Bell Green, Cratfield, Suffolk with his 33-year-old wife Louisa. In 1881, a ‘shopman’ and a patient in Lowestoft Hospital. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 5 North Place, Lowestoft, ‘The Blenheim, East Indiaman’ and 'H.M.S. Warspite in a Gale'. His wife Louisa died on 26 July later that year, aged 43 and Henry Christmas Goddard followed two months later, 'after a painful illness' on 14 September, aged 51, and buried at Lowestoft St Margaret Church on 19 September 1881.
