Chris Newson

Born at Saxmundham, Suffolk in 1961, son of Michael J. Newson (born 1937) and his wife Pauline A. née Edmunds (born 1942), who married at Blyth district, Suffolk in 1961. An amateur painter who in 1984, with little interest for the arts, studied at Isle College, Wisbech 1995-1997, gaining a National Diploma in Performing Arts, and the Welsh College Music and Drama 1997-1998 and gaining a BA Acting from Ipswich Performing Arts School 1999 before proceeding to a BA in Performing Arts 2001. An actor with an Equity Membership 2001-2004 creating Makespace Film Company Ltd in 2006. He married in 2005 Madeleine E. Taylor and in 2007 was employed by Maggi Hambling [q.v.] as her studio assistant. An artist whose work reflects his life, Chris Newson's work can be both raw and unpredictable, painting with generous amounts of oil, he at times depicts tortured characters with a jewel-like mix of colour associated with religious icons, the passion, intensity and anger being a reflection of a difficult past. But the mood changes and you will see calm studies of a Suffolk landscape, so real and sculpted that you want to touch and connect with them. Having his first exhibition at Old Print Works Gallery, Saxmundham and since has had many exhibitions in London, Norfolk and Suffolk including Re+New, Woodbridge and donated a work to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2013 'The Scallop & Unusual Portrati'. He has a studio at 5 Chantry Road, Saxmundham which is open most days and private viewings can be arranged.
