Carole Massey

As Carole Margaret Pope, she was born at Hertford on 8 January 1948, daughter of William Charles Pope and his wife Elizabeth Daphne née Wallace (1916-2000), who married at Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire in 1941. She married at Hitchin, Hertfordshire in 1971, Eric J. Massey and had a son and a daughter, she paints under the name of Carole Massey. Carole was educated at Welwyn Garden City Grammar School and studied art at St Albans School of Art and then at Leicester College of Art & Design (now de Montford University) before following a successful career as a commercial artist, running her own design business for some thirty years. She then returned to her first love of painting, initially gaining a reputation as a portrait painter with subjects including members of the royal family and show business personalities. Carole is a professional painter, popular tutor and demonstrator whose work is in private collections in Europe, the USA and the Far East. An accomplished all-round artist working in watercolour, water soluble pencils, acrylics, pastel, water based oils and mixed media and was runner up in the 'Artist and Illustrator' magazine in their 'Artist of the Year' 2010 competition with her painting 'Reflections 3'. Carole has exhibited at the Society of Women Artist exhibition at the Mall Galleries and has taken part in various exhibitions in Brittany. She is also a best-selling author of at least eight books on how to use water soluble pencils, painting flowers in acrylics and figures in watercolours including 'Drawing Masterclass-Portraits'. She leads many courses in the UK at the popular locations of Flatford Mill, Suffolk, for the Field Studies Council, and Watershed Studio, Essex and in France and also runs a workshop at the renowned Beth Chatto Gardens near Colchester. Her studio is at Fyletts Barn, The Green, Hawstead, Bury St Edmundís, Suffolk.
