PHILPOT, Michael George
Michael George Philpot was born in the Plomesgate district of Suffolk in 1934, son of George Stanley Philpot (29 December 1897-1971) and his wife Irene née Javes (28 November 1904-1982), who married at Plomesgate in 1932. An artist who lived at 61 St Margarets Crescent, Leiston, Suffolk and ran three art groups voluntarily, at Leiston, Aldeburgh Art Group at the Baptist Chapel and Kelsale Art Group at Kelsale Chapel. He went by bicycle from one art group to the other every week purely for the love of art, without any financial support with the motto 'Have brush, will travel'. His later paintings were often of tree branches, crows, rooks and other birds, dramatic black shapes, he often used gum Arabic to emphasise a glossy surface. He exhibited at the Aldeburgh Cinema Gallery, with mixed shows at Aldeburgh Gallery, High Street and Seizmond Gallery, Saxmundham and with the Aldeburgh Baptist Chapel group annually from 1995 until 2019. The first exhibition with the Aldeburgh Baptist Chapel in aid of the Church restoration fund held in 1995 included paintings 'Life at the Top', 'Sea Defences', 'Old Jetty, River Alde', 'Boots and Buckle', 'Leaving Aldringham Church' and 'Tree Study'. Philpot later moved to Leiston Road, Knodishall, Saxmundham, Suffolk but in his later years, after a stroke, he lived in care homes in the county. Michael George Philpot died at Foxearth Lodge Nursing Home, Saxtead, on 17 October 2021, aged 87.
