Hazel Spencer

Born at Surbiton, Surrey on 30 July 1945, daughter of David Landsley Blakey Spencer (born 8 March 1916), a lecturer, and his wife Mary Pamela née Rose (born 17 March 1913), a teacher of French languages, and in 1939 David was living at 19 Speer Road, Esher, Surrey and the following year married Mary Pamela Rose. Educated at St Christopher School, Letchworth and at Holborn Day College, London before studying at Chelsea School of Art 1962-1963 and Twickenham College of Art 1963-1964 where she studied lino prints as an Intermediate NDD student and Fine Art at Liverpool Regional College of Art for her Hons. degree in painting and art history in 1967 and a teaching diploma in 1968. As Hazel Spencer she married at Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1972, David M. Pye and had two children Daniel David Spencer and Suzanna Hazel Pye [q.v.]. She commenced her teaching career at Arundel Comprehensive School, Liverpool in 1968 before moving on to Robert Pattinson Comprehensive School, Lincoln in 1971 and Kirkley High School, Lowestoft in 1981 and was a Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils Specialist Primary Art Supply Teacher 2001. Hazel has her studio at 14 Ivy Lane, Oulton Broad, with its views over Suffolk farmland and open skies and her love of the countryside and horses has inspired her work which includes equine painting in acrylics but paints in all media, including drawing, lino-prints also a series of hand-knitted textiles, photographic prints and greetings cards, inspired by the Four Seasons and seasonal plants, flowers and trees. A member of the Norwich 20 Group with whom she exhibits at the Forum and at the Bridewell Musuem, both in Norwich. A member of the Suffolk Open Studios and with her daughter Suzi Pye, exhibit at the Ferini Gallery, Pakefield, Lowestoft.
