STEARN, Samuel Geater

1812 - 1896

Born at Easton, Suffolk in 1812, son of Samuel Geater Stearn (1774-1855), landed proprietor, and his wife Mary Ann née Cooper. He married at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1848, Ann Reynolds (1824-1874) and in 1851 a 39 year old corn merchant living at The Street, Brandeston, Suffolk with his 26 year old wife Ann, and kept one servant girl. By 1861 a farmer at the same address and was still there ten years later. His wife died at Brandeston in 1874 when he took his niece Emma Cowles as his housekeeper and in 1881 was a farmer living at Brandeston with his 23 year old neice and kept one general servant. He then seems to have retired and took up painting for in 1891, 34 year old Emma Cowles was head of the household as a dairy farmer and 79 year old Samuel, a boarder as an artist at Queen's Head Street, Brandeston. He died at Brandeston in January 1896, aged 84.
