STRICKLAND, Ethel

1876 - 1962

Ethel Strickland was born at Dearne House, Lindley-cum-Quarmby, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1876, daughter of William Poole Strickland (1834-16 February 1911), certified schoolmaster, and his wife Harriet Elizabeth née White (1837-1921), who married at Poole, Dorset in 1858. Ethel trained as a schoolteacher at Yolsted House Training College, 23 Banbury Road, Oxford and in 1901 was appointed an assistant teacher at Church Road Infants' School, Lowestoft, Suffolk at a salary of £65 per annum and in 1907 deputised for her sister, as head mistress at Morton Road Infants' School also in Lowestoft. Her father died at Kirkley, Suffolk in 1911 when his 73-year-old widow was living at 56 Pakefield Road, Kirkley, Lowestoft with two school-mistress daughters, 40-year-old Constance and 33-year-old Ethel. Ethel was an amateur artist, and a painting 'Local Fisherman' is on display at the Southwold Sailors' Reading Room. Ethel Strickland died at 48 Pakefield Road, Lowestoft on 11 April 1962, she was unmarried.
