EYLES, Geoffrey

1906 - 1965

Geoffrey Eyles was born at Wangford, near Lowestoft, Suffolk on 7 November 1906, youngest of the five children of Charles Eyles and his wife Emma Mary née Lucas (1866-1928), who married at Hackney, London in 1894, Geoffrey was a brother to Derek Charles Eyles. Sometime between his birth and 1911, the family moved from Suffolk to 'Rydal', Tennyson Road, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Probably trained by his father and, like his brother, an illustrator, and worked for the University Press, illustrating 'Round the World' series in 1937 and 'Along the Line' in 1938 also 'Air Land and Sea'. In 1939, an unmarried commercial artist, living at 16 Spencer Road, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. He married at Henley-on-Thames in 1946, Joan Mary Payze (1920-) and had two sons Robert Geoffrey, (born 1948) a sculptor, and Nicholas Alan (born 1958), a scientist. Geoffrey Eyles died at 78 Loom Lane, Radlett, Hertfordshire on 5 November 1965, aged 58, leaving his estate to his widow.
