PYKE, Charles

Charles Pyke was born at St James, Westminster, London in 1770, son of Robert and Ann Pyke. He married at St Clement Danes, London on 31 December 1799, Elizabeth Rolfe and their son, Charles James Pyke, was born in Ipswich on 13 April and baptised at St Nicholas Church, Ipswich on 25 April 1803. Noted on a set of four prints of Ipswich 'Drawn & Engraved by C. Pyke, Drawing Master, Ipswich' which were published 1 July 1801. These were advertised in the 'Ipswich Journal' June 28, 1800 'The price to subscribers will be 1£. 11s. 6d. the set, or £1. 1s. the single pair. To non-subscribers the price will be 2£. 12s. 6d. the set'. 'No money will be required until delivery of the prints, which will be in October next'. However, an advertisement later that year announced 'To be sold by Auction. By Thomas Selby, On Tuesday, December 25, 1800. Original Drawings, several Views in Ipswich, some scarce prints and paintings...and other effects of Mr. C. Pyke, at his dwelling house in St Nicholas, Ipswich'. He is probably the C.
