GUTCH, Judith Eliza

1904 - 1992

Judith Eliza Gutch was born at Ipswich on 23 July 1904, second of the four children of Dr John Gutch, MD. (23 March 1870-8 June 1948) and his wife Dorothy Emily Metcalfe (27 August 1868-20 September 1948), daughter of Frank Metcalfe of Mansion House, Sutton, who married at St Michael's Church, Sutton, near Peterborough on 27 August 1901 and came to live at Ipswich. In 1911, Judith was a 6-year-old, living at 30 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich with her father, 41-year-old John, who was at born Holgate, York and her three siblings Dorothy Joan 7, Jessie 3 and John Robert 4 months, and they retained four house servants. An artist in oil and an etcher, of landscapes and figure subjects and a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1928-1935, exhibiting seventeen works 1926-1934, from 30 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich. The subjects were figures, local landscapes and some foreign views including Majorca and Switzerland including in 1926 ‘Alms House Doyen’, in 1927 ‘Sunlight on Majorca’ and an aquatint ‘Loch Rannock’, in 1930 ‘The Windmill, Walberswick’ with five works in 1932 'The Almshouses, Chipping Camden', 'Poppets Abbey', 'The Orchard', 'On the Cotswolds' and 'Ebington Village'. Judith painted a portrait of 'Mr B. H. Hurst, which was presented to him in 1932, on his completion of 50 years as church organist at Long Melford Church. In 1939, she was living at Knapton Hall, Smallburgh, Norfolk with her parents and two servants. Judith married at Peterborough, Northamptonshire in 1949, Claude John Wilkinson (21 November 1903-18 December 1998). Judith Eliza Wilkinson died at The Manor House, North Walsham Woods, Norfolk on 19 May 1992.
