COURTENEY, (William) Ronald

1922 - 2011

Born at Pontefract, Yorkshire on 21 September 1922, son of Gerard Courteney (1891-1970) and his wife Ivy May née Ellis (1902-1989), who married at Norwich in 1921. He studied at Norwich School of Art 1947-1951 and at Bournemouth School of Art 1951-1952. A painter and art teacher who lived at Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk for many years. A council member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle from Norwich 1951-1995 and elected chairmen of the Norwich Twenty Group in 1962. He married at Norwich in 1955, Joan A Miller and they emigrated to New Zealand in the 1990's. A landscape painter in oil and watercolour and regularly painted colourful work evolving into geometrical abstract, along the River Blyth, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists and various exhibitions in East Anglia and since his move has exhibited regularly in New Zealand. He died in New Zealand on 17 July 2011.
