HORSLEY, Charles

1848 - 1921

Charles Horsley was born at Eccles, Salford, Manchester in 1848, youngest son of George Byng Horsley (1812-20 April 1883), a hop merchant, and his wife Catherine née Bentley (1819-23 January 1884), who married at the Registrar's Office, Town Hall, Salford on 21 August 1844. Charles Horsley studied at Manchester School of Art and married at Platt Chapel, Fallowfield, Chorlton, Manchester on 24 July 1873, Catherine Agnes Pountney (1847-20 August 1938), eldest daughter of Henry Wood Pountney of Grove House, Moss Lane, Manchester. A hop merchant for most of his working life but also a landscape artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy and he spent lengthy periods in the Walberswick area of Suffolk where he painted many watercolours 1908-1916. Elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1904, when a hop merchant living at 12 Chester Terrace, St Pancras, London. In 1911, a 62-year-old hop merchant, living at 4 Courts Down Road, Beckenham, Kent with his 63-year-old wife Catherine with the youngest of his three daughters, 22-year-old Catherine Beryl, born South Norwood, Surrey. Charles Horsley died at Annesley Lodge, 8 Platts Lane, Hampstead, London on 24 March 1921.
