Joe James

Joseph James was born at St Ann, Jamaica in 1936. Joe studied painting in Jamaica under Edna Manley (1900-1987) and, as a young man, travelled to England to study at St Martin's School of Art. He then travelled Europe and from 1961 lived and worked in Walberswick, Suffolk before returning to Jamaica where he opened a gallery in Runaway Bay and in 1966, he and his wife Joyce, opened a gallery at Rio Bueno, Trelawny on Jamaica's North Coast between Ochi Rios and Montego Bay and where he continued to paint. They also owned the Hotel Rio Bueno, a favourite of artists, writers, tourists, independent travellers, locals, and adventuresome first-time visitors. Joseph James died in Jamaica on 26 May 2018 leaving a wife, Joyce, ten children and two stepchildren.
