LEGG, Theodore Ellis
Theodore Ellis Legg was born at Crouch End, Middlesex on 5 June 1888, son of David James Legg (1843-16 November 1926), secretary of the Religious Tract Society, and his wife Agnes Adam (1851-4 November 1935), daughter of Edward Ellis of Brucegrove, Tottenham, who married at Lower Tottenham Congregational Church on 28 July 1887. In 1911, Theodore was a 22-year-old architect's assistant, living at Tintern, 20 Mornington Road, Woodford Green, Essex with his siblings David Alleston 21, Kennedy Arthur 19 and Agnes Marjori 18, all born at Crouch End and they retained two servants. During the First World War Theodore served in the Royal Army Medical Corps but by 1921 was back living with his parents when an architect's assistant with E.T. and E.S. Hall of Bedford Square, London. The Century Cinema, formerly at 237 High Road, Loughton, Essex which was opened in 1923, was designed by Legg, the then local architect. Theodore married at West Ham, Essex in 1924, Dorothy Eileen Edith Dorling (17 April 1900-4 June 1997) and they had five daughters, all born in Essex. In 1939, a chartered architect, living at 63 Pier Avenue, Southwold, Suffolk with his wife Dorothy. A member and exhibitor at the Beccles Society of Artists. His collection of photographs which contain monochrome photographs of historic buildings in East Anglia between 1949 and 1952 many of which were taken in the course of his work for the first survey of Buildings of Architectural and Historic Interest, are held in the Historic England archives. Theodore Ellis Legg died in the Lothingland district of Suffolk in 1974.
