Gabrielle Stoddart

Gabrielle was born at Brighton in 1943, daughter of Donald Maillard Stoddart (1913-2001) and his wife Hilda G. née Hunt (1908-1965), who married at Brighton in 1941. She married at Brighton in 1966, Martin A. Baker and works under the name of Gabrielle Stoddart. Gabrielle trained at Hornsey and studied at Brighton College of Art qualifying as a teacher in 1973. There followed a successful career as a freelance illustrator in London winning many commissions for book illustration, advertising, editorial and fashion work, which she combined this with various teaching posts. In 1987 she moved to Suffolk and, combined with her other work, had the opportunity to paint. Her painting holds to her original concept by keeping the balance of an initial idea whilst applying the principles of form, structure which with paint is always challenging. Sometimes there is a rewarding outcome when two elements come together and the painting seems to dictate a course of its own. In 2002 she joined Artworks, an East Anglian group of 30 artists who exhibit annually and is also a member of several art societies. She has exhibited in London, Cambridge and galleries throughout East Anglia including Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham, and at St Edmunds Cathedral Gallery, Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds. She exhibited at Bury St Edmund's Church Walks in 2012 when sixty highly regarded professional artists as well as local artists and students generously donated their work and supported by the School of Art, West Suffolk College with all the proceeds going to St Nicholas Hospice Care and she lives at 7 Church Walks, Bury St. Edmund's. www.gabriellestoddart.dehond.co.uk
