HAVELL, Joyce

1893 - 1985

Joyce Havell was born at Felixstowe, Suffolk on 10 October 1893, only child of Dr Charles Graham Havell, M.D. (24 January 1858-24 April 1941) and his wife Cicely May née Ridpath (1867-1 August 1935), eldest daughter of James Lionel Ridpath of West Kensington, who married at St Andrew's Church, Fulham on 1 October 1892, Dr Havell had been living at Felixstowe from at least 1881. In 1911, Joyce was a 17-year-old ‘at school’, living at The Corner House, Felixstowe with her parents, 53-year-old Charles, born Reading, Berkshire and 42-year-old Cecily, born London and they kept a trained nurse and three indoor servants. Dr Havell, who was the brother of Charlotte Havell, was on the staff of the Felixstowe General Hospital 1910-1935. Joyce was a landscape and still life painter in watercolour and a member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1920-1930, who exhibited from The Corner House, Felixstowe in 1920, three watercolours ‘Harwich Harbour’, ‘Spring Morning’, ‘Summer Evening’ and a Cushion Cover but does not seem to have exhibited again. In 1939, Joyce Havell was living at 333 High Road, Felixstowe with her widowed father and two male nurses and she was the first president of the Felixstowe Art Group 1952-1956 until her move from Felixstowe. Joyce Havell died at Garrett House, 43 Park Road, Aldeburgh, Suffolk on 13 February 1985, she was unmarried.
