HAVERGAL, Eveline Mary
As Eveline Mary Barrett, she was born at Grove Lodge, Upton-cum-Chalvey, Slough, Buckinghamshire on 25 December 1869, eldest daughter of Richard Henry Barrett (1839-11 September 1914), a solicitor, and his wife Emily née Leake (1846-18 December 1916), who married at North Cheam, Sutton on 8 September 1868. In 1881, Eveline was an 11-year-old, living at Grove Lodge, with her parents, 41-year-old Richard and 35-year-old Emily, with siblings Walter Henry 9, Ellen Sarah 8, Jessie Mildred 6, Emily Leake 4 and Herbert S. C. 3, all born at Upton. Eveline married at the Church of St Laurence, Upton, Buckinghamshire on 22 June 1898, Revd Clement Havergal (9 January 1858-1 November 1941), third son of Revd Henry East Havergal, vicar of Caple, Bedford. In 1901, Eveline was the 31-year-old wife of a 43-year-old clergyman, living at Brewer’s Green, Roydon, Diss, Norfolk and the following year the family moved to Inkberrow near Redditch before moving to Paris where the Revd Havergal was assistant chaplain to the British embassy for two years. After a brief period spent at Bagthorpe, Nottinghamshire, in 1905 they moved to Brent Eleigh Rectory, Suffolk from where Eveline Havergal exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1909. Eveline and Clement divorced in 1914, but they later reunited, when she and her children moved to 13 Sidney Road, Bedford. Eveline Mary Havergal was of The Halt, Buxton Road, Wyke Regis, Weymouth, Dorset when she died at 5 Victoria Terrace, Weymouth on 23 January 1931. She had three children, Frances Mary de Draycott (1899-1987), Helen Grace Beatrice (1901-1980), both born at Roydon and Christopher Ridley (1907-2005), born at Brent Eleigh.
