DOWNING, Delapoer

1853 - 1926

Delapoer Downing was born in Dublin, Ireland around 1853, son of Major General David Downing (1802-17 December 1885), of the East India Service and his wife Frances Anne Hamilton née Parkins (1811-7 August 1892). In 1861, Delapoer was an 8-year-old, living at 36 Gloucester Road, Paddington, with his 58-year-old father David, and siblings, Cameron Macartney Harwood 15, born in Italy, Margaret 11, born in India and Fitzgerald David, born in London. In 1871, an 18-year-old student at Wellington College, Sandhurst, but seems to have given up on the army as ten years later, a 28-year-old artist, living with his 40-year-old brother Arthur, a retired colonel in the Indian Army, at 23 Baker Street, Marylebone, London. Another brother Cameron Macartney Harwood Downing lived at Thurleston Lodge, Henley Road, Ipswich. In 1911, Delapoer was a 58-year-old 'painter artist', living at 120 Edith Road, West Kensington, London with a 49-year-old widow, Mary Hillier as his servant and later that year they married in London. A painter of figures and domestic subjects and exhibited the Royal Academy also showing at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1887 and illustrated A. O'D. Barloleyns 'The Wonder Workers' (1899). Delapoer Downing died at Fulham, London in 1926, aged 73.
