HEWITT, Evelyn Alice

1881 - 1958

Evelyn Alice Hewitt was born at Woodbridge, Suffolk on 29 September 1881, daughter of William Henry Hewitt (1831-1915), a farmer, and his wife Mary Jane née Seaton, who married at Kensington, London in 1879. In 1911, Evelyn was a 29 year old living at West Hill, Copdock, near Ipswich with her parents, 80 year old William and 56 year old Mary, and her two sister siblings, Mabel 28 and Mabel Mary 23, both born at Copdock. Evelyn studied at Goldsmith’s College and was a miniature painter, pastelier and designer. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1932-1957 and exhibited from ‘Brion’, Byng Hall Road, Ufford, Woodbridge in 1932 six works 'Michaelmas Daisies', 'Corner of the Angel Inn, Woodbridge', 'Looking down New Street, Woodbridge', 'Glover's Court, Woodbridge' and 'Old Houses in the Square, Woodbridge', in 1933 five 'Glover's Court, Woodbridge', 'Chess Players', 'Meg', 'Turn Lane' and 'An Old Street', in 1935 four 'Wallflowers', 'Sleeping Child', 'Sketch in France' and 'Mottle', and in 1937 three 'Reverie', 'Benjamin of Keyes' and 'Honesty' and was a regular annual exhibitor including in 1943 'In Bruges' and 'Low Tide, Greenwich'. She also exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Miniature Society, in 1928 from Blackheath, London and in 1929 from Ufford, Suffolk. She died at Woodbridge in 1958, aged 76, she was unmarried.
