HITCHCOCK, Laura Selina

1870 - 1956

As Laura Selina Jolly, she was born at the Mill House, Bramford, near Ipswich in 1870, daughter of William Jolly, wholesale grocer, and his wife Lucy Harwood née Squirrell who married in 1867. In 1881, a 10 year old living at Seagull House, Felixstowe, Suffolk with her parents, 46 year old William and 37 year old Lucy, and her four siblings, all born at Ipswich. She married at Ipswich in 1897, Herbert Fairfax Hitchcock [q.v.] and they went to live at The Street, East Bergholt, Suffolk. A painter in oil and water colour and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1905-1908 but exhibited from Woodbine, East Bergholt in 1903 two oils 'Flatford Bridge' and 'Flatford Lock', in 1905 six oil paintings 'Barley', 'Flood Time', two entitled 'Wheatfield', 'Mill Lane, Dedham' and 'Oats', he also exhibited a vies in Devon ‘New Bridge, on the Dart’ and in 1908 her last exhibited work was 'Florence from St Miniata'. She also exhibited at the Society of Women Artists in 1908 from East Bergholt. She died at Ipswich in 1956, aged 85.
