John Chevallier Cobbold

Born at Ipswich on 24 August 1797, son of John Cobbold (1774-1860), brewer, of Holywells, Ipswich, and his wife Harriet (1775-1851) née Chevallier, who married at Aspall, Suffolk on 8 November 1796. Educated at Ipswich and Bury St Edmund's Grammar Schools. He married at Wortham, Suffolk on 14 May 1827, Lucy (1800-1879), third daughter of Revd Henry Patteson of Drinkstone, Suffolk. A member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1832, where he was probably tutored by Henry Davy [q.v.]. In 1851 a 53 year old banker, living at Tower Street, Ipswich with his 50 year old wife Lucy and five of his thirteen children. Mayor of Ipswich between 1842 and 1843 and entered Parliament as one of two representatives for the Ipswich constituency at the 1847 general election and held the seat until his defeat at the 1868 general election. High Steward of the Borough of Ipswich 1875-1882 and a Justice of the Peace. He died at Holywells, Ipswich on 6 October 1882, his will was proved by sons Thomas Clement Cobbold, Nathaniel Fromanteel Cobbold, Felix Thornley Cobbold and grandson, John Dupuis Cobbold [q.v.].
