James Collett Ebden

Born at Loddon, Norfolk on 14 (or 16th) August and baptised on 24 August 1794, son of John Ebden, a surgeon at Loddon, afterwards of Stowupland and Haughley in Suffolk, and his second wife Eliza[beth], daughter of Anthony Collett of Eyke, Suffolk. Apprenticed for eight years under Dr Owen at Stowmarket, Suffolk and in 1812 proceeded to Caius College, Cambridge graduating BA 1816, MA 1819 and elected a fellow, afterwards a fellow of Trinity College and where he was tutor 1817-28. Ordained deacon on 16 November 1817, priest 1818 and in 1832 elected master of Ipswich grammar school which he resigned 1843, when instituted to the rectory of Great Stukeley, Huntingdon. Whilst at Ipswich a member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1835, where he was probably tutored by Henry Davy [q.v.]. He married Eliza, daughter of Sydenham Feast Wylde or Wilde of Burrington, Somerset and had at least ten children. He died at Great Stukeley vicarage on 15 February 1884.
