LONG, Peter Bartholomew
Peter Bartholomew Long was born in St Nicholas Parish, Ipswich on 10 May 1805, son of Peter Thomas Long (1777-1821) and his wife Charlotte née Cook (1783-December 1858), who married at Little Wenham, Ipswich on 17 June 1803. Peter was educated for the law by his grandfather Bartholmew Long and was admitted in 1826 and succeeded his grandfather's practice at Ipswich on his grandfather's death in 1829. He married firstly at Woodbridge St Mary Church on 1 July 1834, Hannah Justina Falkland (1814-1848), second daughter of Capt. Richard Falkland, R.N. and they had six children, Peter de Lande, Justine Charlotte [Head], Maria Louisa [Moncton], Emma Elizabeth [Vachell], Charles Frederick and Albert de Lande. Peter Long married secondly at St Peter's Church, Maidstone, Kent on 14 August 1858, Maria Casley née Braddick, widow of John Casley, a London solicitor, and his stepchildren were Wilbraham John Braddick, Dr Reginald Kennedy and Henry Clement Casley, solicitor for the Ipswich Dock Commission and Anny Florence [Palmer]. Peter Long was a member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1832, where he was tutored by Henry Davy. In 1861, a 55-year-old attorney & solicitor, living at Museum Street, Ipswich with his 47-year-old wife Maria, born at Thames Ditton, Surrey and his four stepchildren. He served as a councillor and alderman on Ipswich Borough Council for some 55 years and was Mayor of Ipswich in 1837, 1840, 1850 and 1854 and during his third term 1850-1851, the first Annual General Meeting of the Suffolk Fine Arts Association was held in the Ipswich Council Chamber. Peter Bartholomew Long died of bronchitis, at his home Claremont, Woodbridge Road, Ipswich on 4 March 1890 and he was buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 7 March 1890, aged 84. His second wife Maria had died at the same address some 34 hours earlier on 3 March 1890, aged 76.
