IPSWICH SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL & AMATEUR ARTISTS

1832 - 1840

The Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists was founded in 1832, by Henry Davy who tutored the young artists, and over the next five years had upwards of fifty members. It was also known as The Ipswich Artists' Society, but it faded away about 1840 when the Committee, on 30 January 'failed to help a proposed exhibition by Suffolk Artists'. It had several noted artist members including Robert Burrows, Gainsborough Dupont, Jabez Hare, Samuel Read and Edward Smythe. George Rowney of London, a supplier of artist's material, was an honorary member. The Minute Book for 1832-1837 is at Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich (K13/1/10.)
