FOX, Robert Stote
Robert Stote Fox was baptised at St Hilda's, South Shields, co. Durham on 7 July 1820, son of George Townsend Fox (1781-18 April 1848) and his wife Ann Stote née Crofton (1779-22 January 1857), who married at South Shields on 7 July 1807. Robert was educated at Rugby and graduated B.A. from University College, Oxford. Robert married firstly at Brandon, Suffolk in 1847, Hannah Day (c1819-29 June 1878), a widow, daughter of Revd W. Bassett of Nether Hall, Bury St Edmund's and in 1861 was a 40-year-old clergyman 'not in care of souls', living at South Cottage, Fornham St Martin, near Bury St Edmund's with his 42-year-old wife Hannah but by 1871 was living at Red House, Horringer, Suffolk with his wife. In 1875 he took the living of the rectory of Nowton, Bury St Edmund's but his wife was buried at Nowton on 3 July 1878. On 29 July 1879, Robert married secondly at St Mary's Bryanston Square, London, Jane Anne Etty (1840-1891), daughter of the late Revd Simeon James Etty, vicar of Wanborough, Wiltshire. Robert exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1880 'Interior of Durham Cathedral' and a still life and was a regular exhibitor including in 1881 'Elvet Bridge, Durham' and paintings of views on the estate of his brother, Sir William Fox (1812-1893) in New Zealand, who was prime minster and also an artist, also paintings of his own residence at Horringer, and in 1882 'Durham Regatta', 'Marble Quarries on the Road to Orta', 'In Barton Mere', etc. In 1881, the 61-year-old rector of Nowton, still living at Horringer, with his 41-year-old wife Jane, born Wootton, Hampshire and their newly born son, Robert Stote Fox, jun. born at Horringer. Robert Stote Fox died at Horringer on 6 September 1888 and buried at Nowton on 11 September 1888.
