RIMMER, John

1888 - 1968

John Aloysius Rimmer was born at Wallasey, Cheshire on 21 June 1888, eldest child of William Rimmer (1857-28 February 1929), steamship owner's clerk, and his wife Sarah Ann née McGrath (1862-1907), who married at West Derby, Lancashire in 1887. In 1901, John was a 12-year-old, living at 2 Frost Street, West Derby, Lancashire with his parents, 44-year-old William and 39-year-old Sarah, with five siblings, Kathleen Mary 11, Dorothy Agnes 9, William Oswald 6, Daniel Henry 4 and newly born Frances Edith. His mother died in 1907 and in 1911 the family were still living at 2 Frost Street, when 22-year-old John was an art student, and with the addition of a 7-year-old brother Robert Hugh. Young John Rimmer studied at Liverpool School of Art and was later assistant art master at the Central School of Art in London. In April 1922 he exhibited from 25 North Street, Sudbury, Suffolk with the Stour Valley Group two works 'Friars Street, Sudbury' and 'Market Hill'. He married at Sudbury on 29 March 1934, Dorothy Ida Hartington (23 August 1900-6/7 August 1975) of Sudbury, whom he met at one of his dancing classes. In 1939, an artist, painter & teacher, living at 19 Jubilee Road, Sudbury with his wife. A local Sudbury artist, dancing instructor, eccentric and celebrity, John was often seen on his bicycle around Sudbury and many local people own his sketches and paintings. He had a collection of fossils and curios which he displayed above Wardman's shop on Market Hill, Sudbury. John Aloysius Rimmer died at Sudbury in 1968.
