GALE, John

1789 - 1860

Born at Orford, Suffolk in 1789, son of John Gale and his wife Susan née Steggall. In 1841 a 51 year old 'independent' boarding at Queen Street, St Nicholas, Ipswich, the home of 61 year widow Martha King and two other lodgers. In 1851 still at the same address with Martha King, being recorded as a 61 year old artist. He exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association exhibition in the New Lecture Hall at the Mechanics' Institute, Ipswich in August 1850 oil paintings 'Cottage Scene', 'An Autumnal Afternoon', 'An Insolvent', 'Evening Scene', 'Declining Sun' and 'The Withered Tree'. He died at Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich in 1860, he was unmarried.
