SAMMONS, John Coulson

1817 - 1874

John Coulson Sammons was born at Newark, Nottinghamshire on 17 February 1817, son of John Sammons (1792-1827) and his wife Hannah née Booth (1794-1869). Young John married at Sneiton Nottinghamshire on 23 April 1840, Sarah Lambert (1819-1897) and in 1841 he was second master at a Grammar School at Hill Street, Wisbech St Peter, Cambridgeshire and was living at Hill Street, Wisbech when he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1843. In 1844 he entered St John's College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1848, taking holy orders took the curacy of Ashbocking, Suffolk before proceeding M.A. in 1851 and the curacy of Needham Market, Suffolk. In 1851, a 33-year-old curate at Gipping St Nicholas, Stowmarket, Suffolk, and Master of Needham Market Grammar School, living at High Street, Needham Market, Suffolk with his 33-year-old wife Sarah, born Nottingham, their two children Robert Thomas Huthersal (1841-1897) and Emma Trueman (1847-1875), both born at Wisbech, another son Edward Jones Compton Sammons was born at Needham Market in 1855. John exhibited at the New Lecture Hall at the Ipswich Mechanics' Institute in August 1850, two watercolours 'Langdale West' and 'A Sunset Scene' and a chalk 'A Coastal Scene'. By 1861 he had moved on as rector of Bennington, Alverton, Newark where he was living with his wife and their three children and where he also kept a small school but in 1865, on the nomination of the Duke of Portland, took the vicarage of Cotham, Nottinghamshire. In 1871, vicar of Cotham living at Station Villas, Beeston, Basford, Nottinghamshire with his 53-year-old wife Sarah and 15-year-old son Edward. John Coulson Sammons died at Beeston on 3 June 1874, aged 56.
