LONGE, Julia Georgiana

1855 - 1928

A Miss Longe exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Spixworth Park, Norwich in 1883 two watercolours both entitled 'Normandy Sketches' and in 1885 another watercolour 'Coddenham, from the Churchyard'. She is one of the two daughters of Robert Bacon Longe (1830-1911) and his wife Caroline Elizabeth née Orman, who married at Bath, Somerset in 1853. Robert was the eldest son of Revd Robert Longe [1800-1890 q.v.]. Miss Longe is probably the artistic eldest daughter Julia Georgiana Longe, who was born at Holbrook, Suffolk in 1855. In 1861, a 5 year old living at 30 Nelson Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk with her parents, 37 year old Robert, landed proprietor, and 32 year old Elizabeth, with four younger siblings, Francis Bacon 4, Robert Douglas 3, John Charles 2 and newly born Caroline who died in 1864. In 1871, the family were living at 21 Croft Terrace, St Mary, Pembroke, with Julia, Robert, John and two additions Henrietta Charlotte 8 and Edward 2. On the death of his uncle John Longe (1799-1872) without issue, the family inheritied Spixworth Hall, Norwich and in 1881, father Robert Bacon, and children Julia, Henrietta and John were living at Spixworth, mother Caroline was staying at 8 Sutherland Place, Paddington, the home of Capt. William Palmer and his family. In 1901 the family were still at Spixworth Hall and in 1911, Julia was a 55 year old living with her 73 year old widowed aunt Isabella Orman, and 10 Bushmead Avenue, Bedford. She was buried in St Peter Spixworth churchyard in 1928, she was unmarried. She was the editor of 'Martha, Lady Giffard, her life and correspondence (1664-1722)' (1911).

Henrietta Charlotte Longe was born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1862, she would have been 20/21 if she was the sister that exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1883. She lived with the family at Spixworth Park, Norwich until she married on 17 August 1891, Charles Arthur Bathurst Bignold (1857-1915), whose family founded in 1797, The Norwich Union, now Aviva, Insurance Company. They lived at Eaton Hall, Norwich and Henrietta was buried at Spixworth St Peter's church on 3 November 1928, the same year as her sister.
