PULHAM, Frances
As Frances Amys, she was baptised at St Mary's Woodbridge, Suffolk on 27 June 1765, the eldest daughter of William and Frances Amys of Woodbridge. On 24 September 1787, she married at St Mary's church, Woodbridge, James Pulham (1765-2 May 1830), a solicitor & notary public, who earlier that year had moved from Sudbury, Suffolk, the native town of John Constable, to Oxford House, Woodbridge, and they were the parents of James Brook Pulham. Frances was an amateur portrait painter, and it is probable that Constable met the Pulham's at Woodbridge in 1815 when James Pulham became Constable's patron and a friend, with James becoming the owner of three of Constable's landscapes. In 1818, when Frances was aged about 53, she sat for a portrait by Constable in London, this painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Frances Pulham died at Woodbridge on 15 June 1856, aged 90.
