Catherine Rising

As Catherine Ursula Reynard, she was born at Sunderlandwick Hall, Sunderlandwick, Driffield, Yorkshire on 22 August 1847 and baptised at Great Driffield, Yorkshire on 13 October 1847, eldest child of Edward Horner Reynard (17 April 1809-22 January 1883), a wealthy landowner, and his wife Elizabeth Mason (5 April 1828-19 October 1891), youngest daughter of Thomas Mason of Copt Hewick Hall, Ripon, who married at Ripon Minster, Yorkshire on 24 February 1846. Catherine married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 7 November 1874, Charles Compton Rising (4 November 1841-15 January 1913) of Henstead, Suffolk, a Royal Navy Captain. As Mrs C. Rising, she exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Society from Horsey, Smallburgh, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1883, two watercolours 'Sketch' and 'Gateway, Fountains Hall, Yorkshire'. Catherine Ursula Rising died at Horsey Hall on 8 December 1890 and was buried at Horsey, Norfolk on 12 December 1890 leaving a son Francis Simon Rising (1878-1940). Her mother Elizabeth, had a stained-glass window placed in Horsey church depicting Catherine at her artist's easel. After Catherine's death her husband took up with Ellen née Seymour, the wife of Jonathon Gedge, with whom she had two sons Frederick and George, and although unmarried had further children, Charles, Frank, Helen, Robert and Elizabeth. Charles Rising died at 24 Withipol Street, Ipswich on 22 January 1913 and in 1914 Ellen, except for Frederick, who remained in Ipswich, and her children moved to Ontario Canada and when she emigrated took along Capt Rising's ashes, which now lay alongside her in Culross Cemetery, Ontario.
