DRIVER, Sydney Amos

1865 - 1936

Sydney Amos Driver was born at Wych Street, Strand, London on 31 August 1865, eldest child of David Driver, a boot closer, and his wife Sarah Ann née Stokes, who married at St Clement Danes, Strand on 29 October 1864. In 1871, Sydney was a 5-year-old, living at Wych Street, Strand with his parents, 36-year-old David and 30-year-old Sarah, both from Cambridge, and siblings 3-year-old Amy and 1-year-old David George, also living with them was their 28-year-old uncle William Stokes. Sydney was educated at Archbishop Tenison's School, Leicester Square, London and studied at St Martin's School of Art and at the Slade School of Fine Art under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911). In 1891, a 25-year-old artist, living at Narcissus Road, Hampstead, London with his parents and five siblings, Amy 23, David George 21, Harry William 19, Nelly 16 and May 9 but for several years from 1900 was advertising his photographic business from Ardleigh, near Colchester, Essex and several of his photographs were used in Basil Oliver's 'Old Houses and Village Buildings in East Anglia'. Taking up art again, in 1911, a 45-year-old artist, a visitor at 2 Khartoum Villa, Ardleigh, Essex, the home of 47-year-old spinster, Sarah Ann Curtis (1862-1924), whom he married later that year. In 1917 a photographer at Ardleigh. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Ingleside, Ardleigh in 1927 an oil 'Constable Country (Dedham)' also exhibiting at Manchester City Art Gallery under the Duveen Scheme. Sydney Amos Driver was of Ingleside, Ardleigh, Ipswich when he died at Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital on 3 November 1936, aged 71. He signed his works 'Sydney A. Driver'.
