MATHEW, Francis Woodbine

1896 - 1980

Born at Lee House, Marine Parade, Dovercourt, Essex on 31 July 1896, son of Gervase Frederick Mathew (1842-1928), naval paymaster-in-chief, and his wife Frances Sarah née Hinchcliff, who married at Barnstable, Devon in 1880. A brother to Kathleen [q.v.] and Doris [q.v.]. He was a boarder at Priory House Boarding School, Dover, Kent and on leaving joined the Honourable Artillery Company. Francis became a priest and travelled both to Hong Kong in 1925 and to Bombay, India in 1937, but in 1927 he exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Lee House, Dovercourt two works 'Near Malacca' and 'Singapore: Inland from the Gap'. In 1939 a clerk in holy orders living at 2 Grange Estate, Prodhoe, Northumberland and he married at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1945, Frieda Widdas (1904-1983) and he died at Durham on 1 July 1980.
