RIDGWAY, Queenie Augusta

1908 - 1959

As Queenie Augusta Warren, she was born at Ipswich in 1908, daughter of Harold John Warren (9 March 1882-1946), a commercial traveller, and his wife Jessie May née Hill (10 May 1884-1961), who married at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1907. In 1911, Queenie was a 3-year-old, living at 327 Foxhall Road, Ipswich with her parents, 29-year-old Harold, born at Bridport, Dorset and 26-year-old Jessie, born at East Carlton, Norfolk. Queenie studied under Leonard Squirrell at Ipswich School of Art 1925-1927 and, as Queenie Warren, exhibited from 327 Foxhall Road, Ipswich at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1927, an aquatint bookplate and her work from this period included, in 1931 an etching 'A Thatched Cottage, Abbey Yard, Dorchester'. She married at Ipswich in 1933, Leonard Ridgway, a soldier in the Royal Army Service Corps, and as an army wife travelled to Haifa, Jerusalem, Cairo, and Durban and, back in England, to London and Chester. On her husband’s retirement from the army in 1955, the family settled in Ipswich. They had two sons Thomas and Paul, who were both educated at Ipswich School and went into the public service. Queenie Augusta Ridgway died at 657 Foxhall Road, Ipswich in 1959, aged 51.
