ANDERSON, Stanley

1884 - 1966

Alfred Charles Stanley Anderson was born at Bristol on 11 May 1884 and baptised on 2 June 1884, twin child of Alfred Ernest Anderson (1859-10 April 1939), a silver engraver, and his wife Emma Bessie née Mitchell (1861-2 June 1936), who married at St David's Church, Exeter on 22 March 1883. Known as Stanley he was educated at Merchant Venturers' Technical College, Bristol, and took evening classes at Bristol Municipal School of Art and began a heraldic engraving apprenticeship learning to etch on metal. In 1901, a 16-year-old engraver, living at 32 Cornwallis Crescent, Bristol with his parents, 40-year-old Alfred and 38-year-old Emma, his twin Rosa Mary 16 and sister Irene May 6. In 1909 Stanley won an engraving scholarship from the British Institution and studied at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short (1857-1945), and at Goldsmiths College, New Cross but claimed to be self-taught from visits to the National Gallery and the British Museum. Elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1910 and elected a fellow in 1923. As Stanley Anderson, he married at Chelsea, London in 1910, Lilian Phelps (1884-1967). In 1911, a 26-year-old artist living at 2 Fowler Walk, Ealing, London with his 26-year-old wife Lilian and the first of their sons Ivan. In 1925, living at 21 Redcliffe Square, London, and an engraving tutor at Goldsmiths' where he taught Graham Sutherland (1903-1980). A member of the Engraving Faculty at the British School At Rome 1930-1952 and elected an associate of the Royal Academy on 23 January 1934 and a member on 25 April 1941, and as Stanley Anderson exhibiting most years until from Old Timbers, Towersey, near Thame, Oxfordshire in 1962. An engraver, etcher and watercolour painter being principally known for a series of highly detailed engravings of traditional British crafts that he began in 1933 and completed over a twenty-year period. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Society from 82 Radcliffe Square, Kensington, London in 1923, a tempera 'Maxim' and two etchings 'Westminster School' and 'Covent Garden' and exhibited at the annual exhibitions of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the California Society of Etchers and many of the major galleries in the world. Alfred Charles Stanley Anderson lived at 'The Old Timbers', Towersey, near Thame, Oxfordshire but died at his then home at Chearsley, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 4 March 1966.
