COWAN, Mabel Grace

1897 - 1992

Born at Woolswich, London on 23 July 1897, daughter of Scottish born James Cowan, a colonel in the Indian Army, and his wife Lillian A. née [?] (born 13 November 1865). In 1901 Mabel was a 3 year old living at 50 Palace Gardens Terrace, Kensington, London with her siblings, 5 year old Lillian M. who was born in India and 1 year old Helen M. born at Woolwich, being cared for by four servants, her parents are absent. In 1939 a landscape artist, living at 'St Kilda', West View, Salcombe Hill, Sidmouth, Devon with her parents, James (14 March 1865-1940), now a director of Boyant Carton Company, and Lillian A. (born 13 November 1865), and siblings Helen Margaret (born 28 April 1899-1976), a SR Nurse in Cairo, and Phyllis Augusta M. (born 24 July 1905-1986), late hotel manageress. Mabel was a member of the Society of Women Artists and exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 159 Cromwell Road, London SW5 in 1923 a watercolour 'Pontetresa, Italy' and a pen & colour drawing 'Convent School, Sanderstead, Surrey'. She died at Hastings, Sussex in 1992, she was unmarried.
