WHEATON, Richard Gledhill
Richard Gledhill Wheaton was born at Salisbury, Wiltshire on 16 December 1868 and baptised at St Edmund Church, Salisbury on 14 April 1869, son of Samuel Bird Wheaton (1834-22 December 1910), a schoolmaster, and his wife Hannah Elizabeth née Walton (1835-22 March 1921), who married at Halifax, Yorkshire in 1860. In 1871, Richard was a 2-year-old, living at St Edmund School, Salisbury, where his 30-year-old father was headmaster and 36-year-old mother, a schoolmistress, with six siblings, Samuel Walton 10, Elizabeth Bird 9, Ann Florence 7, Emma 5, Mary Henley 4 and Catherine 1, all born in Wiltshire but by 1881 they had moved to 12 Queen Square, Battersea, London. In 1901, Richard was a 32-year-old carver & modeller, boarding at 15 Waterford Road, Fulham, London, and he married at Fulham in 1904, Rosina Jane Eldridge (12 August 1875-1951). In 1911, Richard was in the same occupation, but living at 6 Jubilee Place, Chelsea, London with his 38-year-old wife Rosina. In 1916 he had his business at 36 Maxwell Road, Fulham but later moved to Fishmarket Street, Thaxted, Essex. He exhibited four sculptures at the Royal Academy also showing paintings at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Thaxted, Essex in 1923, two oils 'Watling Street from the Churchyard Thaxted' and 'Thaxted Church, South Porch'. Richard Gledhill Wheaton was of The Weaving House, Fishmarket Street, Thaxted when he died at Addenbrooks Hospital, Cambridge on 3 February 1929, aged 61.
