WILDMAN, William Ainsworth

1882 - 1950

William Ainsworth Wildman was born at Manchester on 21 March 1882 and baptised at St Matthias Sneinton, Nottinghamshire on 28 June 1885, son of John Hussey Wildman (1846-18 May 1904), a printer, and his second wife Margaret Ann née Smith, who married at Sneinton on 25 December 1879, John's first wife was Mary née Warren (1851-1877) who married on 21 December 1872. William studied at Manchester School of Art, the Royal College of Art and in Paris before moving to London. A painter of figures and landscapes in oil and watercolour, as well as being an etcher, and was elected an associate of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1926 with whom he exhibited regularly from 1906. Wildman also exhibited at the Royal Academy and with several of the independent London galleries, including Baillie Gallery; Chenil Galleries; Grosvenor Gallery; Goupil Gallery and at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; International Society of Sculptors Painters; Walker Art Gallery; Manchester City Art Gallery; New English Art Club and others. In 1901, a cabinet designer, living with the family at 9 Booth Avenue, Withington, Chorlton, Lancashire but when his father died at 14 Albert Street, Manchester on 18 May 1904, they moved to 43a Inglethorpe Street, Fulham, London where in 1911, Wildman was described as an 'artist painter'. He married at Northwich, Cheshire in 1913, Ethel Mottram (9 January 1881-8 February 1955) and in 1939, a married art master for London County Council, living at 37 Aynhoe Road, Hammersmith, London W.14, his wife, who was an art teacher was living at 62 Bolton Road, New Windsor, Berkshire. William Ainsworth Wildman was of Chestnut Cottage, Little Baddow, Chelmsford, Essex when he died at Chelmsford Hospital on 29 April 1950 and there is a memorial in the local St Mary the Virgin church and his wife is buried beside him. Manchester City Art Gallery holds several of his works. He signed his works 'William A. Wildman'.
