KING, Robert Charles [Hepworth]

1890 - 1965

Born at 87 Lacey Street, Ipswich on 26 March and baptised on 8 June 1890, son of Alice King. In 1891 a 1 year old living at 87 Lacey Street, Ipswich with his grandparents, Charles William King and his wife Adelaide, both 59, and their children Alice 27, Ernest 20 and Amelia 17, all unmarried and working in the family foreign stamp business. He married at Ipswich in 1920, Alice M. Hepworth (1875-1966) after which he hyphenated his name to Hepworth-King. Specialist in Chinese lacquer work at Coytes Gardens, Ipswich in 1922 but had moved to 14 Friars Street by 1925 and by 1933 a ‘decorative artist’ at 32 Butter Market, Ipswich and in 1939 a 'decorative artist' living at 28 Upper Orwell Street, Ipswich. He carried on his business up until the end of the Second World War when he retired. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1945-1952 and exhibited from 'Briar Patch', 20 Dellwood Avenue, Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1947 an oil painting 'The Autumn Bench', in 1948 from 6 Upper Brook Street, Ipswich, an oil 'Hyancinths and Tulips', but in 1950 again exhibited from Felixstowe an oil 'Daffodils' which seem to be his last exhibits. He died in the Ipswich district in 1965.
