HARRIS, John

1825 - 1881

Born at Whepstead, Suffolk on 21 April and baptised at St Petronilla, Whepstead, on 12 June 1825, son of John Harris, a shoemaker, and his wife Mary née Merton. In 1841 a 16 year old apprentice to George Fitch, a grocer & draper at Bures, Suffolk but by 1851 a 25 year old artist living at Causeway, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk with his parents, 60 year old John, now a miller, and 55 year old Mary, with six siblings, Joseph 28, Elizabeth 24, Harriet 22, Samuel 20, Clarissa 16 and Henry 12, all born at Whepstead. In 1861 their address is given as High Street, Monks Eleigh and in 1871 as head of the family at Back Lane, Monks Eleigh when John was still recorded as an artist. He was buried at Monks Eleigh on 18 January 1881, aged 55.
