HARVEY, George Frederick

1909 - 1985

George Harvey was born at Lowestoft on 16 July 1909, son of Henry James Harvey (7 May 1881-11 February 1956), a longshore fisherman, and his wife Alice Isabella née Beavers (11 October 1881-11 April 1867), who married in 1901. In 1911, George was a 1 year old living at 146 Morton Road Lowestoft with his mother and two siblings, Henry 6 and Arthur 5. In 1939 an unmarried 'trawler fisherman & weekly artist' living at High Street, Wrentham, Suffolk with his mother Alice Harvey and siblings Arthur E. Harvey (17 June 1905-), fishing boat engine driver, Lily M. [Meadows[ (3 May 1912-) and Edna V. [Read] (25 June 1919-). The fishing industry was in decline along the stretch of the Norfolk and Suffolk coast by the time of the Second World War. Tourists were taking over, moving in to enjoy the air, the newly built promenades, the frequent train connections with London. They took photographs of the fishermen lolling against their boats: high Cossack hats, tight Guernsey sweaters, heavy thigh boots with metal cleats. But, like many others, with not enough money to live they indulged in painting boats and their surrounding, selling them to eke out their weekly wages and Harvey was both a fisherman and painter.
George died at Brighton, Sussex in 1985.
