LANE, Samuel

1780 - 1859

Samuel Lane was born at Lynn, Norfolk on 26 July 1780 and baptised at All Saints’ Church, South Lynn on 29 July 1780, eldest child of Samuel Lane (1749-1835), a tax collector, and his wife Elizabeth née Mayhew (1753-1832). Because of a childhood accident when, at the age of six, attempting to board a small boat he fell into the water and was insensible when rescued and on recovery had become deaf, but still had some ability to speak. A portrait artist and a pupil of engraver Joseph Farington (1747-1821) and in 1800 enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools under Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) who, in 1802, employed him as one of his chief assistants, who then resided in a house into which Samuel later settled, 60 Greek Street, Westminster. A friend of John Constable, who had especially learnt sign language to enable them to communicate with each other. Samuel exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists, from London in 1819 'Portrait of Capt. Manby', in 1822 'Portrait of the Author of English Synonyms [William Taylor]' and from 60 Greek Street, Soho Square in 1825 four 'Portraits' and from the same address in 1828 thirteen 'Portraits' and the following year four more 'Portraits' also exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1804-1857, some 217 paintings, and at the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. He built up a substantial practice with many of his works being engraved. His portraits include Lord George Bentinck (1802-1848), painted in 1836 and now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery and Admiral Lord Saumarez (United Services Club). Samuel spent some time in Lowestoft and in Aldeburgh for his health and retired to Ipswich in 1853 and in 1858, a portrait painter of Paragon Buildings, Lower Brook Street, Ipswich. He married three times, his first wife was most likely Eliza Lillistone, who married at Barsham, Suffolk on 3 September 1829, Samuel Lane of St Ann, Westminster, and she died in childbirth in Greek Street, Westminster on 25 June 1831, they had one son, Frederick William Lane, born at Westminster on 9 June 1831 who later adopted the last forename of Lillistone. A widower when he married secondly at St Pancras Church, London on 3 March 1835, Catherine Jane Powys (15 January 1803-30 June 1839), they had three children Horatio Powys, Elizabeth Palgrave, and Alice Mary Jane, and thirdly at Norwich, Norfolk on 4 February 1840, Elizabeth Murray. Samuel Lane died at [Lower] Brook Street, Ipswich on 29 July 1859, leaving a widow Elizabeth.
