Louise Craigie

As Louise Corinne Barrell, she was born in Kent in 1970, daughter of David G. Barrell and his wife Delia née Sheffield, who married at Lewisham in 1969. Louise married Benjamin Thomas Craigie and paints under the name of Louise Craigie. After graduating from Manchester with a first-class honour's degree in textiles, Louise began her teaching career in Ipswich gaining her Postgraduate Certificate in Education through training whilst teaching and as well as being a working artist is also a secondary High School teacher. Her later work is drawn whilst out walking with a small sketchbook, which is explored and represented in diverse ways in her studio at 39 Ruskin Road, Ipswich, sometimes painted or created with a mixed media feel, other times textiles, sewing and layering occurs within her work. Sometimes capturing the whole landscape or snippets and sections with colour making slightly abstracted forms which are often strong characteristics of her work. Her work is inspired from where she walks in Nacton, Playford, Rushmere, Wherstead, Cockfield, Mistley, and Flatford and she has exhibited at UCS Gallery 3, Ipswich and over the past few years has had several solo shows including in Suffolk at The Craft House, Woodbridge and The Paper House, Church Street Framlingham, her work now has an international following. A teacher and current Head of Creative Art Faculty in Harwich School, Essex and for several years has been Vice Chair of the art group Association of Suffolk Art Teachers (A.S.A.T.).
