BACON, Marjorie May

1902 - 1988

Marjorie May Bacon was born at Ipswich on 6 January 1902, daughter of Arthur Bacon (2 August 1877-1962), pastrycook, and his wife May Emily née Humm (4 September 1881-1966), who married at Ipswich the previous year. In 1911, Marjorie was a 9-year-old, living at 60 King Street/1 St Peter’s Street, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk with her parents, 32-year-old Arthur, born at Great Yarmouth and 30-year-old May, born at Colchester, Essex, with her sibling 6-year-old Audrey, also born at Ipswich. Marjorie was educated at Yarmouth Convent High School and studied at Great Yarmouth College of Art 1914-1923 and won a scholarship in 1917 and in 1921 passed the Board of Education's drawing examinations at the earliest possible age, she also studied at the Royal College of Art, obtaining her diploma A.R.C.A. in 1927. 35-year-old Marjorie married at Kensington Registry Office, London in 1936, 75-year-old widower Henry Macbeth-Raeburn, who had been her tutor for eight years and latterly his assistant engraver. In 1939, an artist, living with her husband and her two sibling brothers, Trevor Francis, an art student, and Raymond Arthur M., a chemist, and her sister Audrey Winifred, at their parents' home at 33 Southtown Road, Great Yarmouth. An artist & printmaker, she exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy also showing at the New English Art Club and was a member of the Great Yarmouth Society of Artists 1929-1930 and as Marjorie Bacon, a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1943-1945 exhibiting in 1943 three oils, 'Pride of the Farm Yard', 'Owen Tudor as a Foal' and 'Autumn Flowers' she also had on show a mezzotint after Raeburn 'Master Lodge'. Marjorie May MacBeth-Raeburn died at 33 Southtown Road, Great Yarmouth on 9 February 1988.
