Mo Folkes-Miller

Maureen [Mo] Folkes was born in Burgh Castle, Suffolk now Norfolk in 1947, her mother's maiden name was Newark. She studied art, English and physical education at Loughborough University, Leicestershire in the 1960's and followed a career in teaching in the UK and Gibraltar. In the years to follow Mo had varied positions such as office work, modelling and supply teaching in London, fitting in painting whenever she had the time. As Maureen Folkes she married at Sudbury in 1980 Colin B. Miller and painted under the name of Mo Folkes-Miller. In the late 1980s Mo and her family moved to France, where they purchased a house and the local hotel. She moved back to Suffolk in 1990's and in 2005 founded the Folkes-Miller Fine Arts gallery in Little St Mary's, Long Melford where Mo represented some fine artists both local and international and where she also exhibited her own work. Mos paintings are lively, colourful and atmospheric with strong shapes and depth of feeling. Her work is extremely varied, encompassing a wide variety of subjects favouring a loose, expressionistic way of working, inter-mixed with traditional methods ranging from representational to pure abstract. She also hel weekly adult painting classes in the art gallery. She latterly sold the gallery and moved to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
