HUNTER, John (1933-2020)

1933 - 2020

John Ernest Hunter was born at Highfield Road, Winchmore Hill, Enfield, London in 1933, the only child of Ernest Alfred Hunter (1897-7 November 1975), a wood carver and later a retail tobacconist, and his wife Dorothy Hilda née Colwell (1898-23 March 1961), who married at Hackney, London in 1929. John studied at Hornsey College of Art in the 1950s and married firstly at Lothingland in Suffolk in 1959 a fellow student Wendy M. Edwards and they had a son Joe David, born at Sutton, Surrey in 1967. As well as painting landscapes and urban views in a variety of media, he was an outstanding printmaker, cutting in lino and wood and his large-scale, colourful prints, produced in his studio at home, following in a tradition including that of Edward Bawden. John was an art teacher, at secondary schools in Carshalton, south London, then Manchester and, from the 1970s until retirement, as head of art at Great Cornard Upper School (now Thomas Gainsborough school) in Sudbury, Suffolk. Whilst teaching full time, he became chief examiner in art for the London exam board which included marking, visiting, and moderating for schools in Italy and the Middle East. John Hunter exhibited at the 'Visions of Sudbury' show in 2007, a linocut 'Old Cattle Market' and in 2009 two linocuts 'Postcard from Sudbury' and 'Sudbury Market'. After his retirement from teaching in 1989, he continued this work for around 15 years and then moved to Cambridge where he married secondly in 2005 Jill M Morrison. John Ernest Hunter was killed in a car accident in 2020.
