SPURGE, Ernest Clements
Ernest Clements Spurge was born at Church Street, Great Coggeshall, Essex on 2 May 1862, son of William Spurge (16 June 1822-15 July 1886), formerly a perfumer and later a lace manufacturer employing 50 people, and his second wife Charlotte Clements (1828-11 December 1903), only daughter of the late Jacob Clements of Charlotte Street, Lamport, who married at Kingston Church, Portsea Island, Hampshire on 12 December 1860. William's first wife was Judith Emma Johnson, lace manufacturer and youngest daughter of the late Thomas Johnson of Coggeshall, who married at Islington, London on 13 January 1845 and who died at Coggeshall in 1859, when her hairdresser husband took over her lace business. In 1881, Ernest was an 18-year-old apprentice chemist, in the employ of chemist Frederick Spurgeon at 37 Upper Brook Street, Ipswich. In 1880 he passed excellent, certificate and prize winner in freehand drawing at the Ipswich School of Science & Art. In 1891, a 28-year-old unmarried chemist, living at Oatlands Drive, Walton-on-Thames, Chertsey, Surrey. He married at Ashington, Sussex on 17 September 1891, Ellen Georgina Macey (1862-1931) and in 1911, a chemist & post office at Oaklands Park, Weybridge, Surrey. He married secondly at Westhampnett, Sussex in 1932, Anne Hayes (13 July 1876-20 February 1947) and in 1939, a retired chemist, living at 69 London Road, Bognor Regis, Sussex. Ernest Clements Spurge was of Church Street, Coggeshall when he died at 142 Rayne Road, Braintree, Essex on 22 January 1949.
