BASÉBÉ, Henry Cecil

1892 - 1972

Henry Cecil Basébé was born at East Preston, Worthing, Sussex on 27 May 1892 and baptised at St Andrew's Church, Worthing on 13 November 1892, youngest son of Harold Ernest Basebé (15 May 1856-1943), a watercolour artist and photographer, and his wife Marion Edith née Treble (4 April 1859-1946) who married at Edmonton in 1884. In 1901, Henry was an 8-year-old living at 6 Danefield Terrace, Westham, Eastbourne, Sussex with his parents, 43-year-old Harold, born St Pancras, London, and 40-year-old Marion, a miniature artist, and his two sibling brothers, Ernest Bertrum 15 and Claude Geoffrey 13. Henry joined the Royal Navy during the First World War after which was a significant early motoring artist working for various manufacturers. He designed advertisements for Vauxhall, Sunbeam and Wolseley in 'The Motor Owner' magazine 1924; Lanchester advertisement in 'The Autocar' magazine of 10 September 1926; front cover of 'The Autocar' for Wolseley cars on the 22 February 1935 and illustrated the 1935 sales brochure for Wolseley cars and illustrated the Vauxhall catalogues, one of these original paintings is signed 'H le Basebé'. In 1939, an 'artist & draughtsman specialising in drawing for the motor industry', living at 92 Islington Row, Birmingham with married Isobel Basebé (born 1 September 1891). Henry Cecil Basebé lived at 56 High Street, Debenham, Suffolk where he died on 20 April 1972.
