CLARKE, Minnie Ellen

1857 - 1942

Born at Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmund's on 5 May and baptised at St Mary Bury St Edmund's on 18 June 1857, only daughter of James Johnson Clarke (1832-1864), fishmonger, and his wife Georgiana Ellen née Palmer. Her father died in 1864 when his widow Georgiana married in 1866, Samuel C. Wallace who took over the fishmonger & poulterer business and in 1871 Minnie was an 13 year old scholar living at Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmund's with her stepfather 33 year old Samuel, 37 year old mother Georgiana, siblings James E. 15, John H. 12 and Frank K. 9, and step-siblings William E. Wallace 3 and Harry C. Wallace 2 with a Wallace nephew 16 year old George P. Kingston. In 1881, Minnie was a visitor at the home of grocer George Kingston, at Norwich Road, East Dereham, Norfolk but by 1891 was a 33 year old artist living at Bonham Road, Lambeth, London, she had living with her half-brother, 23 year old William Wallace, a clerk. In 1939 living on private means at 29 Rhodesia Court Hotel, Harrington Gardens, Kensington, London and died at Kensington in 1942. On 29 April 2015 at Lawrences Auctioneers Limited, Bletchingley a group of three small watercolours were up for auction.
